The third edition of the annual Faculty of Art and Design Week celebration has kick-off with an exhibition on Wednesday, June 30, 2021.
The event, which showcases the crafts of final year students in the departments of Fashion Design and Textiles, as well as Art and Design of the faculty would be climaxed with a Fashion show and art presentation on Saturday, July 3, 2021. Other activities include, seminar for staff and students; and Chaskele Art festival.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ben Q. Honyenuga, in the company of Management members opened the exhibition with words of commendation to staff and students of the faculty for their dedication towards the event in spite of the COVID-19 disruptions.
He said the faculty remains a strategic unit of the University, for which management was committed to leveraging its opportunities for the advancement of the institution.
He entreated the students to pursue excellence and be ‘apostles’ of precision quality through their handicrafts. “As artists and designers you ought to be calculated and meticulous because, by your training you are expected to exhibit quality in your delivery. In doing that, you will be projecting the University’s name as worthy ambassadors as well as projecting yourselves.”
Dr. Richard Gbadegbe, Dean of the Faculty of Art and Design, said the merger of the annual fashion show and the art exhibition in 2019 has provided a bigger platform for final year students to showcase their skills to the public.
He noted that, wares and artifacts from the exhibition were constructed from objects from the natural and artificial environment, in line with the theme: ‘Eco-System: Art and Fashion Perspective.’
The works which forms part of the final project of the students, would be assessed by an external examiner, Dr. Efua T. Vandyck, a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences from the University of Ghana.
